Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades appeared to see the funny side of the situation during an earlier joint press conference.
"It's not something which is to do with terrorism, you know what I mean," he tells reporters, before starting to chuckle.
"Always there is a woman involved," he adds, with more laughter as he walks out of the room.
Earlier reports suggested the hijacker had demanded to see his estranged wife, who lives in Cyprus.

13BR, congrats! You will land at Paphos now & it's an extra 1.5 hour drive on the A6/A1 up towards Nicosia & over the Green line into Northern Cyprus. It's all motorway to Nicosia & never very crowded. Paphos airport will be busy now with all the diversions & only has 3 baggage belts. It's normally quick through there, but Larnaca normally handles double the flight arrivals of Paphos, so it's bound to take longer than usual! Turn left onto the airport road & right at the end of it onto the B6. The A6 motorway is very nearby & take the Limassol & Nicosia signs onto it. It's a really easy drive!
